The Correspondent

The Correspondent

The Correspondent by Virginia Evans is a novel written entirely in the form of letters. Sybil Van Antwerp has spent her entire life writing letters, to friends, family, famous authors she admires. Now in her mid-70’s and with failing eyesight, she reflects on her life with all its joys, accomplishments and tragedy.

While in the midst of learning she might have a biological family she has never met, and being courted by two different men, a mysterious person from her past shows up with threatening letters. She takes in a teenage boy who has lost his way, yet is estranged from her own daughter. Although her life seems tidy and predictable, it is as messy and complicated as life usually proves to be.

This is a beautifully written book, honest and at times heartbreaking, full of both biting wit and tender vulnerability; a story of aging and connection, family, and chosen family, grace and forgiveness. A recommended read.
